1. Register a Domain Name
Register a domain e.g. my-website.com with a domain registrar.
You might like to try other domain registrars, i.e. 123-reg.co.uk, net2.co.uk. For more exotic upperlevel domains try eurodns.co.uk.
2. Configure Domain Settings
Log into your domain registrar and configure your domain DNS settings to point to the Knarly.com nameservers
ns1.knarly.comns2.knarly.comExample setup with 1and1.co.uk
- Click "Customer Login" and sign in to your Package Overview... a list of domains.
- Click the *Package* you want to edit. Note this can contain multiple domains.
- Click Manage Domains
- Select the Checkbox next to the domain you want to edit and in the toolbar above the list select "DNS" -> "Edit"
- Edit the following DNS like so Alternatively, set to CNAME
Alternatively, if you want to test this out first.
You can mimic domain forwarding by editing your local computers host file with a line of the knarly.com IP followed by your domain name e.g.
Windows XP: c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
Macintosh (OS X): /private/etc/hosts
Add this line to the file...
82.153.33.53 www.somedomain.com
NOTE: Internet Explorer stores IP addresses for 30 minutes - this is to reduce the number of DNS requests. Unfourtunatly this means you might not see the Knarly site registration page and instead see the prevous resting place of your domain. In Firefox the IP address is stored for just a minute so less of a problem. In both cases if you fail to see the start up screen you should restart your browser and try again.
